| Layoffs still on table for state corrections |

IOWA - The 1.5 percent cut in state spending ordered last month could mean layoffs for employees in Iowa’s corrections system, but the department director said today he hopes to avoid that option with a hiring freeze on vacant positions. Iowa Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin told members of the state board of corrections that he can’t guarantee that layoffs are off the table as the department considers ways to meet its obligations under the mandatory cuts. “The goal is to not lay anyone off. Will we be successful? I can’t tell you,” Baldwin said. The department has stopped hiring and will leave vacant positions unfilled, he said. The cuts ordered by Gov. Chet Culver in December target virtually ever corner of the state budget, but Culver, who lacks the authority to take more targeted action on the budget, has asked the legislature to protect the state’s public safety and corrections budgets from the spending reductions when he ordered the across-the-board cuts in December. The corrections department will meet the requirements of the cuts and adjust accordingly should lawmakers restore funding to the department during the legislative session beginning Monday, Baldwin said.
