OHIO - Two weeks before ordering $640 million in state spending cuts, Gov. Ted Strickland's administration paid more than 800 employees of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to attend a year-end celebration at the state fairgrounds. Although inmates catered the Dec. 5 event and corrections employees raised money for food and decorations, the three-hour gathering at the Ohio Expo Center was held on state time, meaning the event cost taxpayers about $60,000 in wages alone. The state also covered the travel time and expenses of employees who drove from outlying parts of Ohio, some more than two hours each way. "A Christmas party -- a holiday party? No, people can't be entitled to that," said David Hansen, president of the Columbus-based Buckeye Institute, a free-market advocacy group that says it views government from a taxpayer's perspective. "Did it have to happen on state time?" he asked. "State time is very valuable, because I pay for it." The event, dubbed a "Year End Review," featured holiday decorations, hors d'oeuvres, awards and appearances by VIPs such as the governor. Read more.
