CANADA - Three jail [officers] fired last fall for allegedly mishandling a prisoner have been reinstated. “It meant a lot to them to get their jobs back," Joan Jessome, president of Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, said Monday. Chris Fraser, Chris Dixon and Rob Hutchinson were let go after the province’s correctional officials viewed a videotape that was said to show the three men using excessive force on an inmate. Nine other [officers] involved in the same incident were suspended without pay for between two and five days. The incident occurred Aug. 1 at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth after a corrections officer, who was assaulted by an inmate, called for backup. The three were fired in October, but because the union launched a grievance, the men have been able to claim employment insurance benefits, Ms. Jessome said. Read more.
