WEST VIRGINIA - Several West Virginia legislators say recent violence at the Salem Industrial Home for Youth suggests it's time to review the juvenile corrections systems. A 20-year-old prisoner was recently charged in the sexual assault of another inmate, while five corrections workers were charged in the unrelated beating of an inmate. Sen. Roman Prezioso, chairman of the Select Committee on Children and Juveniles, says nothing should be done until the criminal process plays out. But after that, he says he'll take the problems "very seriously.'' The Marion County Democrat says it's government's responsibility to protect the rights of all its citizens -- even those who have gotten off-track. He also says better pay and security equipment might help. |
