OpEd: Officers burned out

ONTARIO, CANADA - After reading that Correctional Officer sick time in Ontario is averaging 30 days, I could understand how the public would be upset, however it just makes me sad for those workers that this issue never seems to be addressed and probably never will because of the lack of political will and political resolve to deal with the real issues.

As far back as 1990 I was making presentations in Queen's Park to joint government committees on correctional officers working conditions and the life draining stress in Ontario jails. I sat on a committee under the NDP and visited many Ontario jails and heard the same story jail after Jail.

The most violent predators in our society cannot safely live within our communities without endangering the public, so we as a society choose to house then together in jails. We then ask normal men and women from our communities to guard them so that they do not escape or kill each other.

A culture of violent intimidation, and assaults then becomes the norm under that living arrangement, where the fight/flight alarm in correctional officers goes off many times daily in correctional officers until over the years it drains them of life and burns them out until they are in many cases discarded on sick leave or worse, they die of stress related diseases.
