WEST VIRGINIA - There are some things it’s easy to spend money on — health care, education, seniors, veterans. And then there are some things that it’s tough to write a check for, namely corrections. When convicts are sentenced to prison, it’s easy to take an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality. As soon as the jury hands down the verdict in a high-profile case, it’s the end of the story. Except it’s not. By the year 2012, the number of inmates in state prisons could swell to 8,530. Right now, the state only has space for 5,300 prisoners, and currently, the regional jail system is housing 1,200 convicts because there is no room in state prisons. Add that to the fact that the regional jail system is struggling. The West Virginia Regional Jail Authority board of directors recently voted to raise the per diem rate for inmates by 72 cents.
