| Inmates demand voter education |

SOUTH AFRICA - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has failed to conduct voter education in prisons, the South African Prisoners' Organisation for Human Rights (Sapohr) said on Thursday. Sapohr president Golden Miles Bhudu said the IEC had failed to provide crucial voter education campaigns in all South African prisons with a population of more than 150 000 inmates. "We are concerned that the offenders will be denied the important right to vote. We have discovered that many offenders do not even have identity documents and no one is doing anything to ensure that they get them." Bhudu was speaking from the Johannesburg Prison where he is serving an eight year sentence. He was found guilty and sentenced last year for helping Israeli national Moti Sabag escape while he was being transported to Lindela Repatriation Centre for deportation in 2005. Bhudu said he had received numerous complaints from prisoners in different prisons who feared they would be denied the vote. Read more.
