ZAMBIA - The Human Rights Commission has commended President, Rupiah Banda, for commuting death sentences of fifty-three inmates on the death row. Commission chairperson, Pixie Yangailo, says President Banda has shown that he respects people's right to life even when guilty of atrocious crimes. Ms. Yangailo said in a statement that the next constitution should recognize the advantages of abolishing capital punishment. She said the abolition of capital punishment will open a new chapter for Zambia to compel the state not to deprive people of the right to life. And Ms. Yangailo has also commended government for intensifying efforts to safe-guard human life. She said the launch of a drug that reduces excessive bleeding in women after child delivery is an important step in reducing maternal mortality. |
