N.J. prison to close this summer

NEW JERSEY - Faced with a declining inmate population and local pressure to redevelop the site, the state plans to close the 23-year-old Riverfront State Prison in Camden by this summer, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections said yesterday.

Matt Schuman said the prison's 780 inmates would be relocated and its more than 400 employees would be transferred to other facilities.

"No layoffs are planned. They are going to be reassigned," Schuman said.

He said closing Riverfront is possible because the state's overall prison population has declined from a level of some 27,500 inmates six years ago.

"Today it's about 22,000, so it is doable without risk of overcrowding," Schuman said.

The prison aroused considerable local opposition when it was built in 1985 and Schuman said there is pressure today from local officials to redevelop the 17-acre property with views of the Philadelphia skyline. Read more.
