OpEd: Hostages to justice

MICHIGAN - I commend the Free Press for educating the public about sexual abuse in American correctional facilities ("Hostages to justice," Jan. 4-8).

The bipartisan National Prison Rape Elimination Commission has been developing national zero tolerance standards for the prevention and response to sexual violence in state and federal prisons, jails, lock-ups, and juvenile, immigration detention and community corrections facilities.

The commission is working through a comprehensive process to research and evaluate best practices and standards with the help of criminal justice experts, correctional associations and survivors.

When the commission completes its report and finalizes standards, they go to Congress and the Obama administration, in particular, to the attorney general, who ultimately decides if the NPREC requirements and recommendations have the capacity to promote safety by preventing sexual violence in correctional facilities.
