TEXAS - With its inmate population cut in half, the Texas Youth Commission, the state’s juvenile prison system, will fire about 100 people and eliminate another 330 jobs that are unfilled in March, the agency said. Some facilities may also close, said the executive director, Cherie Townsend. Lawmakers ordered major changes to the commission in 2007 after a sex scandal involving accusations of staff members abusing inmates and a cover-up. The inmate population was slashed to 2,400 from almost 5,000. The agency now takes only felony offenders up to the age of 19. |
