Inmates set for work camp

VERMONT - Residents will soon see inmates contributing to the community as the Southeast State Correctional Facility moves from a women's prison to a men's work camp. The prison is empty right now, with the last of the women transferred Jan. 10 to Northwest State Correctional Facility in Swanton. For the past week, the staff has undergone training to prepare for 100 men who will arrive in early February, said Superintendent David Bovat.

"We're taking this time to make some changes," Bovat said. Those changes include increased safety precautions, such as new cameras, as well as updating aging electrical systems and adding new showers and bathrooms to inmate recreation rooms.

Windsor will host the second work camp in the state, joining Caledonia Community Work Camp in St. Johnsbury. The offenders chosen for the camp are considered low-risk compared to the general population, with no violent felony convictions, said Lisa Menard, director of policy development for Department of Corrections. It's a good deal for the inmates, who receive two days of credit on their sentences for every day they work at the camp, Menard said.

Inmates will work in the prison and outside. Vermont Correctional Industries, a sign and license plate shop, will continue as it had when women were at the prison, Menard said. Within six months, work crews will go out into the community, Bovat said. The exact nature of the work is still up in the air, Bovat said, and he plans to meet with town officials to learn what kind of work they want done. Read more.
