AUSTRALIA - Sex offenders will receive "triage" psychological assessment at the County Court in a pilot scheme aimed at stopping them re-offending. The project could be extended statewide after a review as part of a program to reduce recidivism. Under the trial, psychologists operating at the Melbourne sittings of the County Court would make a preliminary evaluation of convicted criminals about whether they posed a high risk of committing further sex crimes. The information would be given to judges, who could then seek a full-scale clinical assessment of high-risk sex offenders. According to Corrections Victoria, the evaluations would be separate from the psychological and psychiatric reports ordered as a regular part of pre-sentence hearings. They are designed to help judges deal with sex offenders and aid the criminals' rehabilitation and management. Read more.
