OKLAHOMA - The director of the state Department of Corrections, Justin Jones, has talked about the burden placed on prisons by laws requiring many convicted felons to serve at least 85 percent of their sentence before they can become eligible for parole. As the list of "85 percent” crimes has grown through the years, so too has the prison population, and Jones knows that problem only figures to worsen. Now he has another voice in the chorus, this one coming from the Oklahoma Academy. In a report resulting from three days’ worth of meetings involving Oklahomans of all stripes, the academy recommends sentencing reform, narrowing the range of standardized sentencing or even repealing the 85 percent law. The nonprofit academy meets every year to study important issues facing the state and to make recommendations. Some years the group is more successful than other years in terms of effecting change.
