| State fills more than 800 positions |

CONNECTICUT - Whenever Gov. M. Jodi Rell talks about the growing budget deficit, as was the case during her Jan. 7 state-of-the-state address, she reminds taxpayers of the hiring freeze she imposed May 23. But according to data compiled by the Office of the State Comptroller for The Advocate, since Rell issued the order, 824 full-time staffers, including those considered "interim full time employees" have been hired in a variety of agencies at a total cost of $14.4 million. And that's not counting hundreds more employees a brief review of additional state records show were hired by the University of Connecticut, the UConn Health Center and the state judicial branch -- entities whose hiring and payroll entry is not overseen by the comptroller. "Give me time to pick myself up off the floor," Susan Kniep, president of the Federation of Connecticut Taxpayer Organizations Inc., said. "It kind of leaves one speechless. When the governor says she's imposing a hiring freeze, I believe the public takes her at face value that is in fact what's happening." Read more.
