NEW YORK - The Cayuga County Ways and Means Committee approved a resolution Tuesday to stop providing free meals to corrections officers at the Cayuga County Jail. For many years, the county paid for corrections officers' meals because they are unable to leave to get their own, said Sheriff David Gould. However, the free meals were not in their contract. “It was, I think, a handshake years ago that they would receive meals. And the biggest reason is ... because they can't get out to get meals. They're locked in there eight hours a day,” Gould said. “Every other department in the county, if they want to take a lunch hour, they go out and buy something. These guys couldn't do that.” If approved by the full Legislature next week, the resolution will save county taxpayers approximately $32,000 per year. “I'm sure it is because of the economy,” Gould said. “It's certainly their choice. They are the Legislature, they control the funding and this is what they've decided. I agree with whatever the Legislature goes along with. Just because it's a unique situation that they can't get out to get meals, it would have been nice if they could have continued but I totally understand the circumstances.” Read more.
