| State money sought for juvie jail |

WYOMING - The Natrona County Commissioners know exactly how they'll spend the money they hope to get from the 2009 legislative session. "We need money for a juvenile jail if we're going to build it," said the commission's new vice chairman, Ed Opella. "We can't do it by ourselves." There's been a need for a better alternative for detention for the Natrona County's juvenile offenders since 1998, when the former adult jail was picked as a temporary solution. Other counties also use the Natrona County facility as "their" juvenile jail, with 40 percent of the admissions from 2002-2007 coming from outside Natrona County. State-sponsored studies through the State Advisory Council on Juvenile Justice, a federally-funded study through the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and a recent study commissioned by the sheriff's department recommended building a new regional facility to serve Natrona and the surrounding counties. The stumbling block is finding a way to meet the price tag for the 32- to 38-bed facility that would meet both the local and regional need, Opella said, which is expected to be $13.2 to $13.6 million.
