| Inmates, COs charged in teen death |

NEW YORK - Prosecutors have charged jail [officers] and several inmates for participating in a violent secret society within the walls of Rikers Island that led to the death of an inmate. An indictment unsealed at the State Supreme Court in the Bronx Thursday states that Michael McKie, Khalid Nelson, and Denise Albright were charged with running "The Program", a society that brought together a group of inmates that would "shake down" and "beat down" other inmates. Sources say that Christopher Robinson, 18, was killed by other inmates because he was unwilling to get with "The Program". Prosecutors claim the [officers] stood idly by as inmates beat Robinson to death in his cell in October. "They didn't turn a blind eye to violence. They authorized and directed it," Assistant District Attorney James Goward said. McKie and Nelson were not charged in the beating, but were charged for enterprise corruption which carries a sentence of up to 25-years in prison. Albright was given a lesser charge. Read more.
