MICHIGAN - Early next month, three supervisors at the Saginaw County Community Mental Health Commission will go to Lansing and face a state social work board. The reason? Some of their subordinates say that, under law, they don't have the authority to supervise. They have a point. The three -- Linda L. Schneider, director of clinical services, and Richard S. Thiemkey and Nancy A. Urban, who work under Schneider -- supervise licensed bachelor's degree social workers and licensed master's degree social workers but don't have master's degrees in social work themselves. Schneider and Urban are licensed bachelor's social workers, Thiemkey is a social service technician. Ordinarily this shouldn't make a difference. Get good managers in the right leadership positions regardless of their academic resumes. It happens in a lot of places. Except in Michigan in social work. Read more.
