KANSAS - The Department of Corrections is closing two prison units sooner than scheduled as it tries to cut $7.9 million from its budget. Minimum-security units at Osawatomie and Toronto were due to close April 1.

But the department said Friday it will close the Osawatomie unit Feb. 6 and the Toronto unit Feb. 27. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and the Legislature are working to close a state budget deficit of as much as $300 million in the fiscal year that ends June 30.

Corrections Secretary Roger Werholtz said closing the two units earlier than planned will save about $500,000 in staff salaries for the remainder of the budget year. Werholtz said the accelerated closings were possible because of available bed space and open staff positions at other prisons. The department has capacity for 8,402 male inmates and currently has 7,864. Ten of the 17 Osawatomie staff members will transfer to Lansing, and 15 of the 17 Toronto staffers will go to El Dorado, Werholtz said. Read more.
