| 28 prison inmates stage 'minor riot' |

A racially charged riot broke out at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, Calif., this week, leaving some prisoners with minor injuries. The scuffle at the state prison involved 28 inmates, said Lt. Javier Aboytes. It started as a fight between black and Southern California Mexican prisoners, he said. The brawl, which Aboytes characterized as a "minor riot," began about 8 p.m. Monday in the B yard of the North Facility of the prison. While he did not have specific information about the reason the fight began, he noted that North Facility houses Level III inmates, the highest security category at the prison. "We've had several minor scuffles like this that involve different races or different gangs," he said. Some inmates involved in the riot were treated for bruises and scratches but no staff members were injured. About 100 correctional officers from neighboring Salinas Valley State Prison responded "as a precaution," Aboytes said. The 28 inmates involved in the riot were placed in administrative segregation, or special controlled units. The 1,400 prisoners housed on the B yard of the North Facility have been put on a modified program where they will be restricted to their cells for most of the day and have correctional officers escort them if they must leave, Aboytes said. The modified program will be in effect while correctional officers interview inmates to investigate the riot, he said. The findings will be referred to the District Attorney's Office, as is routine. The Correctional Training Facility, designed to fit 2,815 prisoners, currently houses about 7,000. |
