| State won't file charges in detainee death |

RHODE ISLAND - The state will not bring criminal charges in the death of Hiu Lui “Jason” Ng, a Chinese national who spent his final month at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls last year. But Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch said yesterday that he is “deeply troubled” by the treatment Ng received while at the Wyatt. The state’s findings follow months of tumult surrounding Wyatt’s involvement with Ng’s care. The privately run jail recently disciplined seven staff members; the federal government canceled its contract to house detainees there and a federal criminal investigation is under way. Ng, a 33-year-old computer engineer from New York, was in ICE custody when he died in Rhode Island Hospital on Aug. 5, 2008, of undiagnosed, advanced cancer. He also had a fractured spine. His lawyers, who plan a civil suit, say Ng was denied medical care and legal access while at Wyatt and other centers where ICE detained him. Read more.
