Inmate hospitalized after incident at Jackson Co. jail

A Jackson County, Miss., jail inmate suffered critical injuries in an incident at the maximum-security jail over the weekend and remained hospitalized Tuesday, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said.
Michael Joseph Caughhorn, 21, has been in the intensive care unit at Singing River Hospital since Friday, when he was injured after watching a wrestling commercial on television in the jail's general population, Byrd said.
He was in jail on a warrant for a charge of uttering forgery.
Accused of injuring Caughhorn is Calvin Long, an inmate in his 20s who was in jail on a contempt of court charge for possession of marijuana. Byrd said Long now is in isolation and is facing a possible assault charge.
Caughhorn's family said a friend whose father is in the jail told the family that Caughhorn was jumped by eight inmates.
"Joey has been unconscious since Friday night and is fighting for his life," said an uncle, Dale Caughhorn of Vancleave. "They wouldn't let us see the video, and the family wants to see it."
Byrd said the video would show there was no attack. Instead, he said, several inmates walked up to Caughhorn once he was thrown to the floor.
"We have the video," Byrd said. "They were watching a wrestling commercial... . You don't see them arguing, anything. He (Long) grabbed him (Caughhorn) around the neck and slung him to the floor. The boy (Long) threw him down pretty hard. I'll let you watch the video tomorrow."
Byrd said the results of the department's internal investigation would be turned over to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office for investigation.
