MICHIGAN - The Michigan appeals court has upheld a $15.5 million verdict for 10 women who say they were sexually harassed by male guards at a state prison. The court rejected many issues on appeal, including a claim that the jury in Washtenaw County should not have heard the allegations in a single case. The opinion was released Wednesday. The January 2008 trial involved 10 women who were housed at Scott Correctional Facility, but there are more than 500 other plaintiffs. Evidence showed a sexually hostile atmosphere at Scott, and the women described groping, rapes, inappropriate searches and other harassment by guards. The appeals court says the Michigan Corrections Department was warned in 1997 that sexual harassment at Scott was a problem. |
