Prison escapees apprehended

Two prison escapees who were believed to be dangerous were captured Wednesday after a day-long manhunt in the wooded hills south of Interstate 70.
The men walked away from the Colorado Correctional Center at Camp George West in Golden. They were last seen at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The escapees were identified as Aaron Lang and Jason Garringer, both 21 and both of Mesa County.
Lang has been serving time since March 2001 on two weapons charges and one count of motor vehicle theft. Garringer has been in prison since July 2003 on two counts of burglary and one count of assault.
Although the two men were in a minimum-security facility, "all inmates are considered dangerous on escape status," said Linda Carroll, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Lang and Garringer were flushed out of underbrush by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies tracking them with dogs.
"There was a pretty decent foot chase as they tried to get out of the ravine," said sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Tallman.
The search was hampered by thick woods and steep terrain. Tallman said deputies were glad to capture the men before dark, when the search would have been halted.
Lang and Garringer were first seen about 9 a.m. on Lookout Mountain Road near I-70.
A reverse 911 call went out shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday to alert about 500 residents of the Riva Chase and Genesee subdivisions, Tallman said. They were given descriptions of the men and were told to lock their doors and windows and to stay inside.
Throughout the day, residents reported sightings of the two men, who were dressed in white T-shirts and gray sweat pants.
Nearby Ralston Elementary School covered its windows and kept children inside during a lockdown ordered as a precaution.
