N.J. ends dairy work after escape

NEW JERSEY - New Jersey Corrections officials say inmates will no longer work at a state-owned dairy. The decision to end the work program at Skillman Farm in Montgomery Township comes three weeks after one prisoner walked away from it. Since then, local officials have asked the state not to let inmates return to work, saying it's not safe to have near homes and schools.

Farm work had been a privilege for minimum-security inmates at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility as they neared the end of their terms. Corrections officials say inmates will continue to work at five other department-owned farms. The dairy is to close at the Somerset County farm, but the state plans to continue growing crops there.
