Jail information bill lauded

WYOMING - Elected officials in Park County say they support a proposed state law that would allow sheriffs to release booking photographs and other basic information about inmates housed in county jails.

"I'm all for it," Park County Sheriff Scott Steward said of House Bill 72, which has passed the committee phase and is awaiting consideration by the full House of Representatives. "I think the public has a right to know, and as long as the statute allows it, we should do it," Steward said.

As interpreted by most county attorneys, Wyoming law allows only the Department of Corrections, which operates state prisons, to publicly release information on inmates. The bill would authorize county sheriffs to release the same basic data, including an adult inmate's name, photo, reason for incarceration, sentencing details and release date. Park County Attorney Bryan Skoric said he would like to release that information, but state law does not allow it. Read more.
