'Fight club' was rumor, records show

FLORIDA - A corrections officer's joke may have sparked allegations of an organized "fight club" at the Orange County Jail, sheriff's records released Thursday show. But investigators did not find evidence that officers gambled on inmate fights or anything else illegal during their review of the jail.

Officer Luis Ricardo Escobales told Orange County Sheriff's Office investigators that rumors of a fight club could have stemmed from a joke he cracked during a dispute between two inmates. "During the conversation, [Escobales] jokingly held up a twenty dollar bill and said, 'I have twenty on so and so', " the 14-page report shows.

After speaking with Escobales and Officers Samuel Cruz and Mark Anthony Caruso, investigators did confirm there were fights at the jail that were not properly documented, but none were arranged, promoted or instigated. Officer Erick Meja, who also was named in the initial investigation, was not questioned during the probe, records show. Read more.
