ALABAMA - The state Department of Corrections has announced it will sell more than 400 acres of undeveloped land in a fast-growing area near the Limestone Correctional Facility. Prison Commissioner Richard Allen said the underfunded agency is selling the land to help offset about $90 million in deferred maintenance and capital improvement costs. The property had been used by the prison for farming, but the prison system said in a statement that it hoped to cash in on BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure), which will bring thousands of new jobs and numerous homes to the already fast-growing area of east Limestone County and west Madison County. The department will sell in three parcels, hoping that prospective buyers will see each as a "prime spot for real estate development, both commercial and residential." The largest parcel totals 185 acres and is being offered at a minimum bid of $5.08 million. This land is next to Parcel 2, which is 122 acres with a minimum bid of $3.35 million. Parcel 3 is 120 acres with a minimum bid of $3.3 million. Bids must be submitted for only individual parcels. Read more.
