| Bill: Go to prison, lose your state job |

DELAWARE - The state House unanimously passed a bill Thursday that would prevent state employees from keeping their jobs while serving prison terms. The bill, which is supported by Gov. Jack Markell, was prompted by News Journal articles last month that detailed unpaid leaves given to three environmental control officials, including two child molesters, while they were imprisoned. The legislation moves to the Senate, which likely won't take up the issue until mid-March at the earliest. Starting today, the General Assembly is in recess for six weeks of budget hearings. Sen. Bruce C. Ennis, co-sponsor in that chamber, said he's confident the bill would pass the Senate. After the newspaper's revelations in December that the state's then-top environmental official, John A. Hughes, had granted the unpaid leaves to incarcerated employees, Markell called the moves "disturbingly serious breaches of the public trust." Markell added that he would not tolerate the practice after taking office Jan. 20. Markell spokesman Joe Rogalsky said Thursday the governor likely would sign the bill if it passes the Legislature.
