Local business hinges on prison's outcome

ILLINOIS - Businesses in Pontiac are worried. They are worried that more than 500 employees of Pontiac Correctional Center might move away if the facility closes, taking with them an estimated $18.2 million worth of disposable income. They are worried about having to make dramatic changes in their operations, or face closing their own doors.

They’ve had these concerns, and others, since former Gov. Rod Blagojevich announced in May the Department of Corrections would close the 137-year-old prison and transfer inmates to a largely unused prison near the Quad Cities and to other prisons scattered throughout the state. The new governor, Pat Quinn, has not said he would reverse the order to close the prison, but he has made it clear a review of the Department of Corrections plan is in order. While that is promising, uncertainty remains among the business community.

“It has definitely made an impact to begin with,” said Cheri Lambert, Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. “We have heard that people are continuing to spend money, but they are being more cautious.” Read more.
