Union files state labor complaint

PENNSYLVANIA - The union representing more than 150 [officers] at Westmoreland County Prison has filed an unfair labor complaint against the county, claiming jail officials disregarded negotiated work rules when disciplining corrections officers. About a dozen union members attended a meeting of the county Prison Board Monday to protest what they claim is unfair, retaliatory behavior by the jail's managers.

"We hoped to establish a system where you can report wrongdoing by a superior and not be retaliated against," said Casey Mullooly, president of the United Mine Workers of America Local 522, which represents corrections officers at the jail.

[Officers] and jail management have been at odds over disciplinary actions and other work issues. Warden John Walton conceded yesterday there has been a communication problem with union members but denied any wrongdoing by administrators.

"We're working to repair it. I don't think we're in a good situation, where we want it to be," Walton said. Read more.
