Searchers found the body of an escaped Missouri inmate trapped under a log in the Spring River on Wednesday morning. They think Vicki Barbrow drowned in high water after she escaped from a deputy while being transported from one county jail to another. Barbrow was trying to cross the river with shackles on her feet. Barbrow's family was actually in the area when her body was found. They started searching for her on Tuesday afternoon. A crew in a Highway Patrol helicopter found her body, however. "Shortly after the search began, the Highway Patrol spotted something in the water," said Capt. Kevin Davis of the Lawrence County (Mo.) Sheriff's Department. "We sent ground crews in to check and we found a body under a branch in about five feet of water." Barbrow bolted from the custody of a Howell County sheriff's deputy on Saturday and, after a chase, was last seen near Verona and the Spring River that day. When law enforcement officers suspended their search, Barbrow's family traveled here from Pomona and West Plains to search for themselves. Barbrow's son, her sisters, her niece, her mother and other family members knew she could have drowned but they'd been holding out hope. They said the discovery of the body at least gave them some closure. |
