FLORIDA - The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has taken the first step toward a hiring freeze by no longer accepting applications for employment. A potential applicant who entered the main sheriff’s headquarters on Tuesday was informed by a desk sergeant that a hiring freeze had begun on Monday. Sgt. Larry King, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, clarified that while there are still positions to be filled, the agency is no longer accepting additional applications. “They will accept applications if a position becomes available, but right now, there is really nothing posted,” King said. “We have more applications than positions to be filled. ... I would say this is the first step (toward a hiring freeze).” The sheriff’s office last week had announced cutting $5.6 million off the current $160 million budget. Those cuts included maintaining 30 unfilled corrections officer positions and less dollars for inmate food and medical care. |
