Workers brace for strike

CANADA - Roughly 100 workers at Monteith Correctional Facility and a dozen parole and probation officers in the Timmins and Iroquois Falls area may go on strike if no agreement can be reached at the bargaining table. Last week, corrections workers and union members voted 89 per cent in favour of a strike if no resolution can be made.

"There will be a minimum number of officers. The majority of the jail will be run by managers and the inmates will likely be locked down and out just for exercise and fresh air," local Ontario Public Service Employees Union spokesman Don Ford said.

Around 5,500 corrections workers and supervise offenders across the province will be effected. The problem at hand is a plan by the government that would penalize correctional officers and youth workers for taking more than five sick days per year. Read more.
