A small plane made an emergency landing Thursday in a field near the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison unit that houses death row, authorities said.
The pilot and passenger aboard the Cessna 150 walked away with scratches and cuts, said Tela Mange, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. The plane descended about 6 p.m. Wednesday, shortly after taking off from the Livingston Municipal Airport, which sits across the highway from the Polunsky Unit.
It was initially thought the plane came down as the result of a fuel line failure, Mange said.
FAA spokesman John Clabes said the airplane was on a pleasure flight when it sustained engine problems and was forced to land. The plane was heavily damaged.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said the Polunsky Unit spans 472 acres. The crash occurred about 200 yards south of one of its perimeter guard towers. She said none of the 2,900 male inmates at the unit were outside at the time.
