| Courts step up DUI offender monitoring |

MINNESOTA - The Watonwan County Board of Commissioners were informed of new efforts by some courts in the State of Minnesota to monitor those deemed as “intensive defendants” convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Brown and Watonwan Counties have been chosen by the state of Minnesota as counties outside of the pilot counties (Hennepin and Ramsey) to use “Smart Start,” an Ignition Interlock device. The system hooks up to an individual’s vehicle and in order to start the vehicle the measurement of alcohol detected by the device must be below the .02 threshold. Smart Set, the vendor of the device,was at the Watonwan County Board Room on January 30, 2009 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to discuss and demonstrate the use of the device to interested county officials.
