| Weather delays construction progress |

IOWA - Winter weather has delayed by about three weeks progress on the construction and renovation of the Lee County Corrections Center, said John Hansen of Houghton-based Midwest Construction Consultants, the lead contractor on the project. "Right now, walls are up on most of the facility, the roof is on and it's insulated. So right now they are pouring floors in the facility and starting their initial layer of block, and pretty soon they will be putting up block walls," Hansen said following a presentation to the Lee County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. "Which really doesn't upset me greatly. Because if we had a lot more work done, we'd be dumping a lot more heat into the building at this point." However, Hansen still anticipates the entire project being completed on time by summer 2010. Voters overwhelmingly approved the $6.2 million renovation and expansion of the jail at the polls last year with the passage of $5.4 million in general obligation bonds. Designed by Moore and Associates P.C. of Omaha, the expansion includes a 15,000-square-foot, pod-style facility that will boost the jail's bed count to 96, expandable to 144, make maintenance easier, increase safety for both inmates and staff and bring the jail into compliance with current state codes.
