Inmates claim negligence

ALASKA - Inmates locked up in the Anchorage Jail are accusing the Department of Corrections of being negligent for housing them in harsh conditions.

"I want them to shut this thing down," inmate Gerald Mahle said. "This is unfit for people to be housed in here."

The inmates say for over a month they haven't had proper heating at night.

"You can't make somebody cold and you can't make them too hot. That's cruel and unusual punishment," inmate Bill Sanden said.

The inmates stay bundled up with extra blankets, but many say it's not enough for the temperatures they claim dip down into the 50s. The November module is one of 13 housing units at the jail, and registered at 68.5 degrees on Thursday.

"Right now it's fine. The heat is OK now but in the morning and then at night, as soon as you guys leave, they'll turn the heat back down and we'll be freezing," Mahle said.

The Department of Corrections admits it had some heat problems. "The staff is constantly monitoring and regulating temperatures," Anchorage Jail Superintendent Debbie Miller said. Read more.
