Officers waiting for back pay

NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA - About 400 unionized corrections officers are still waiting for about $750,000 in back pay and raises, says the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union. The money is owed to them by their employer — the provincial government — and was awarded in an arbitration decision back in December. The money has yet to appear on their paycheques, CBC News reported this week.

< The delay was due to technical difficulties with the government’s computerized payroll and purchasing system, CBC said.

Union spokeswoman Deedee Slye said corrections officers have bills to pay and other financial commitments and are wondering when they will receive their money. She said the delay isn’t specifically hooked to the union’s situation but is part of a chronic problem with the province’s computerized payroll system. Steven Feindel, director of corporate information systems in the Finance Department, told CBC there’s no glitch in the system. It simply takes time to input the information, he said.
