MICHIGAN - Juvenile offenders could soon share a corrections facility with hundreds of adult offenders, who would be moved from the Huron Valley complex in Ypsilanti to the WJ Maxey Boys Training School on M-36 in Livingston County's Whitmore Lake. The proposed move is already causing some concern.

It's not your ordinary school for boys, WJ Maxey is a training facility for juvenile offenders, but soon hundreds of adult offenders may move in.

Russ Marlan, Dept. of Corrections: "They're prisoners who were found mentally competent to stand trial, they were convicted and sent to prison, but they have some sort of mental health issues that require treatment."

Spokesman Russ Marlan says last may the Department of Corrections decided to move some female prisoners into the Huron Valley facility.

Russ Marlan: "We'll have all of our female prisoners housed in one location, which will cut down on our transportation costs and some of our overtime security costs."

The 275 men will move into the main complex at the training school while the 60 juvenile offenders who currently stay in the facility will move into another building across the street. Marlan says just the thought of the transfer has already raised concern. Read more.
