ARIZONA - Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas broke ranks with his closest political ally Thursday by criticizing Sheriff Joe Arpaio's decision to segregate undocumented immigrants in the county jails. Arpaio announced the policy Tuesday as a cost-cutting measure, and on Wednesday marched 220 convicted inmates from the Durango Jail to Tent City. Thomas called it a disagreement among friends and said the two had discussed it. "I believe that racial and ethnic segregation by the government is unconstitutional." Thomas said. Thomas has an ongoing battle with Maricopa County Superior Court over a DUI-probation program conducted in Spanish. That case is before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Thomas said he has no intention of suing Arpaio over the "disagreement." |
