| Senate looks at stimulus impact on prisons |

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Senate’s top Democrat said lawmakers probably will vote this evening on an economic stimulus package after making progress in bipartisan talks on cutting the more than $900 billion plan sought by President Barack Obama. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said lawmakers “made progress since last night” and “we’re now in the throes of trying to work something out.” He said he is confident of putting the measure to a vote between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Washington time. “Democrats and Republicans must decide today whether they will work together to come up with a plan and join the president on this road to recovery,” Reid said on the Senate floor. “America is waiting to see what we’re going to do.” Even so, when Republican Susan Collins of Maine was asked as she walked out of Reid’s office hours later how she felt about prospects of reaching an agreement, she said, “Not as good as I felt earlier.” Collins is among the lawmakers seeking reductions.
