| Report finds faults with Megan's Law |

NEW JERSEY - Megan's Law has no effect on reducing the number of child victims or the likelihood that molesters would not commit new sexual offenses, according to a report the National Institute of Justice released yesterday that is certain to have national implications. The study by the state Department of Corrections and Rutgers University examined whether Megan's Law reduced the number of sexual offenses, reduced the likelihood sexual offenders would commit new crimes and the cost-effectiveness of the law. Megan's Law was named for Megan Kanka, a year-old Hamilton girl who had been raped and murdered by a sex offender, Jesse Timmendequas in 1994. The outrage over the crime sparked the law requiring sex offenders to register with law enforcement officers and communities, depending on the severity of the crime. Similar laws were adopted in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well a federal version, according to the report. Its findings were unequivocal. Read more.
