OKLAHOMA - Okanogan County’s newest K-9 officer found a stash of drugs, was rewarded with a tennis ball but then didn’t want to give up the chew toy to handler Rod Picking during a recent Okanogan City Council meeting. Picking, a corrections deputy at the Okanogan County Jail, talked about Calvin and demonstrated how the dog can sniff out drugs. Picking and Calvin, 3, recently completed a six-week training course at McNeil Island Correctional Facility. They completed the course with high marks, Sheriff Frank Rogers said. Calvin eventually will succeed Lucy, who is scheduled to retire, Rogers said. Lucy’s handler, Carrie Port, recently left the sheriff’s office to work for the state Department of Corrections. Calvin, a mixed breed of mostly retriever and boxer, is a rescued dog and part of a K-9 team of two patrol dogs, four drug detection dogs and their handlers. In December the Okanogan City Council approved a special units operation agreement with the sheriff’s office. The 2009 budget includes $6,000 for special units, including the K-9 corps. Read more.
