An inmate received seven life sentences Friday for his role in a 15-day prison standoff during which he helped hold two officers hostage in a watch tower and raped one of them. Steven Coy, who already was serving seven life terms before seizing the watch tower with another inmate in January, also received other sentences ranging from six to 35 years. Coy pleaded guilty in March to 14 charges, including sexual assault, escape, kidnapping, assault and promoting prison contraband. He admitted raping an officer, who was held hostage for 15 days, and a kitchen worker. Four of Coy's latest life sentences, which were for sexual assault and kidnapping, will be served consecutively. The three remaining life sentences, which were for kidnapping, will be served concurrently. Coy will serve his time at a prison in Maine, where authorities agreed to move him in a deal to end the standoff. He will be kept in a cell similar to those of death row inmates, with little time away from his cell and isolated from other inmates, said Cam Hunter, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Corrections. Ricky Wassenaar, the other inmate involved, is awaiting trial. |
