RHODE ISLAND - Although many educators across the country would like to see more students screened for Irlen Syndrome, the disorder has yet to be widely recognized by the American medical community. Advocates are hopeful, however, that more states will get behind mandatory testing in the schools. According to Leonore Rizy, a retired special education teacher and a local Irlen screener, many school systems throughout the world require students to be tested for the syndrome. “It’s mandated for all children in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and a couple of other English-speaking countries,” she said. In America, however, support for testing is more sporadic. Massachusetts and Oregon have bills pending to require screening for Irlen Syndrome in all schools, according to Irlen.com, while Alabama has already recognized the disorder as a learning disability. One of the stumbling blocks in garnering more support for testing is the medical community’s resistance in recognizing the disorder, said Ms. Rizy. Rose Warburton, while seeking treatment for her daughter Emily, said her optometrist dismissed the validity of the disorder outright. “It’s not something they can diagnose because it’s not a visual thing; it’s the perception between the eye and the brain.
