OpEd: Examine costs

CANADA - The Auditor General's report on the operations of the federal prison system sheds light on an agency potentially wasting millions of dollars by not investigating savings on staff overtime costs and inmate food. It's not clear if there would be any savings, because Corrections Canada has yet to conduct an analysis on the cost of procuring goods at its 58 federal institutions.

In her report released last week, titled "Economy and Efficiency of Services -Correctional Service Canada," Auditor General Sheila Fraser highlighted Corrections' ballooning overtime costs and failure to investigate bulk purchasing of food and cleaning products for prisons. "The agency doesn't appear to pay much attention to economy and efficiency," Fraser told the Whig-Standard in an interview.

The report suggests that ample time is devoted to security and safety, while action on ways to save money on operations is slow or nonexistent.

Corrections says it agrees with Fraser's recommendations, which include investigating the feasibility of a national menu for institutions. Prisons purchase food locally or regionally. Corrections hasn't even completed research on a national menu, the report found. Read more.
