Inmates to pay for digital cable TV

OHIO - Prisoners will pay the $15,000 bill to install digital cable at the Delaware County jail, but they shouldn't expect unlimited channel surfing. The switch from analog to digital is purely out of necessity because the TV antenna the jail currently uses won't work after analog signals are shut down, Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said.

The national transition was originally scheduled to happen Feb. 17 but has been postponed to June 12, giving consumers four more months to prepare. Legally, jails must provide prisoners with recreation, including television, Davis said. "We're doing this because we're required to do it."

An inmate commissary fund will cover the cost of installation, plus the $190 monthly service fee, Davis said. The package will include about 25 channels, but viewing will be limited to five basics: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS. Read more.
