RHODE ISLAND - Since 1995, the Wyatt Detention Facility has been fully accredited by the American Corrections Association. The facility has been re-accredited three times since then and in its most recent accreditation last April, Wyatt received its fourth consecutive outstanding accreditation rating. The facility actually received a rating of 99.3 percent and, ultimately, a final rating of 100 percent was awarded after a second review. Four months after receiving the outstanding accreditation rating, a detainee, Hiu Lui “Jason” Ng, who had been in the custody of Wyatt for 25 days and treated medically on 13 of those days, passed away. The detainee was diagnosed during his confinement with advanced cancer, which was causing many of his medical issues at the time. Outrage from family members and other groups followed, alleging that the detainee was mistreated while at Wyatt and that this mistreatment possibly caused his death. The Wyatt Detention Facility quickly responded with an internal investigation. It found that seven of its staff were responsible for mistreating Ng and violating facility policies. These employees were quickly reprimanded and/or terminated. The investigation also determined that, although mistreated on several occasions, the detainee died of cancer. Wyatt leaders did not make excuses. They immediately investigated their own and meted out severe punishment to those responsible. Read more.
